Eve (63.176.159.15) -

I don't think that I would go to Brazil unless I at least, partially understood and could correspond in the Portuguese language. I remember one time, a little while ago, that my father ventured over there and he was robbed by a local while walking down the beach. It's a really different place that can be very dangerous for the unsuspecting 'touristas'.

If that is the case Eve, I suggest you just follow on that note but let me tell you that you will be losing the chance and experience the adventures and beauty of the world. Your father is also at fault as well by not equipping himself with the proper knowledge or abilities to protect himself from abuse and language barriers. I would suggest you take a lesson or two about self-defense and have a common sense. A common sense is one of the best equipments you can carry to another country.

You shouldn't generalized the safety and the vacation image of a particular country because of some isolated case. Maybe your father was just unfortunate and met a bad faith in one of his journeys but that doesn't mean that you should follow his footsteps or fate. Go travel and try Brazil even once in your lifetime.

It is not that troublesome if you take on travel packages and tours, but you'll probably encounter it if you are a backpacker. Traveling under a travel agency can be a bit expensive but it has also its advantage. Take for instance a local tour guide who might excel in more language than English and Portuguese, can help you understand the places and dishes without even learning their language but then again it is pricey but is safer.

Well Eve, that is your call but you can't influence everyone to have the same mind setting as you have. Some people will find ways to overcome that language barrier, and not everyone are as such beginner as you are. For some who wanted to go out there on their own, they make it to a point to have an interpreter or a guide with them, or better will study the language just to fully experience the majestic country of Brazil.

Comment #5 Bing (63.176.159.124) - 01/12/10 04:28

I think it is best that before you try to go visiting a certain country, you must be knowledgeable enough about that certain place and that you at least know the basics of their language. There are lots of bad guys out there and they will use your weakness to be able to do bad at you and at Eve's case, his father got robbed. Just do your part and you are on your way to safety.

Comment #6 Joy (63.176.159.44) - 02/06/10 20:15

You have a point there Bing, there are indeed lots of not so good guys no matter where we go so we need to take care of ourselves and one of the best thing to do is to make our selves familiar with the language of the country that we think of moving in so that we cannot be fooled by anybody. Have a good day people, just keep all of those post coming.

I think it is necessary to learn about the language of a certain country before getting there. I think it would be convenient to do so. Just the basic language and you are on your way to a pleasant vacation. But anyway, surely there are English translations anywhere and we just need to bring a dictionary in case we would be needing it. Have a great day guys and just keep those posts coming.
