Having someone do all the work for you sounds like an excellent idea. Though I'm not sure you'll be happy with the price. Maybe someone can give us a general idea of the import tax rate on cars.

I'm not entirely sure but i do know shipping cars from the US to Brazil is 100% tax so you will actually pay 100% of you cars value just to import it. Also from Mexico to brazil is probably somewhere in that arena.

I know that you cannot import used cars in Brazil. But I also know that you can import classic/collector cars in Brazil

Do you know how old must be the car to be considered as a collectible/classic car. Some people told me 30 years

Who do I have to contacy to have the info. The Brazilian Embassy cannot help !

Thank you very much for the info

What is popular to import in Brazil?

Cars for import to Brazil must either be new not previously titled or registered, or more than 30 years old and of collector quality. Brazil reserves the right to inspect the vehicle for collector status prior to shipping.

Shipping a car that is simply old will not qualify.

Similarly, finding a collectible car that is almost junk and shipping it to Brazil for restauration at lesser cost will not qualify.

The car must be of collector quality, though no necessarily perfect.

The most popular are early Mustangs, followed by Camaros and Firebirds/TransAms, then to older and unique Cadillacs, Lincolns, etc.

Import duties are 80% of the combined cost of the car, shipping and insured value. If you are going to do this, ship roll-on/roll-off rather than container to keep shipping costs down, insure privately rather than through the shipper so the cost is not exposed, and get all the documentation you can on the value of the car. A bill of sale showing that you paid $10, 000 for a car that they think is worth $20, 000 will result in customs spending hours on the internet researching the value of the car and you'll wind up paying on that value.

In short, it's not worth it.

As you have mentioned, the process of car import to Brazil is costly hence not worth it. What then is the popular import in Brazil? I agree that at times inconsistencies in descriptions of exported cars would to them spending days or years at the ports and eventual laying off. What a waste of time and money!

I wonder if you would really want to incur more costs on importing a car than you could still find in Brazil. There seem to be many uncertainties in the whole import industry so if I were you, I'd just look for a local car gararge and purchase one.

How about paying a visit to the Brazilian Immigration department?

Comment #10 Nicky (63.176.159.138) - 11/25/09 21:24

I think you should consider buying a new car instead of shipping your old car in Brazil. The cost is a little high and so you must think of the possibilities of buying a new car.

But the choice still depends upon you and your preference. Better check out the net for the shipping procedures and costs.

Comment #11 Irish (63.176.159.2) - 12/21/09 22:54

I think the same way Nicky. I think it would be much economical if we consider buying a new car instead of shipping those old cars in Brazil. But, as they always say, there are lots of things that people consider on deciding things out. Maybe that car has a sentimental value to the owner that is why they want the car to be shipped, right?

Best of luck to you.

Could I get a car to be imported into Brazil from the Caribbean? This would certainly not surprise me, not one bit.

Comment #13 Kasi (63.176.159.37) - 02/01/10 17:22

Get all your legal information in order because there is a legal procedure with the years etc. with car importation from any country. Taxes and duties need to be investigated too there are quite a few that will be applied to the vehicle.

Something else you could keep in mind is if the Model car can be serviced or if maintenance would be a problem after the car is imported.

Thanks for posting those information Kasi, they are great help for those who are interested in importing cars to Brazil. I will be moving to Brazil for my work and thinks of the things that I will be needing for me to ship my car with me. Would it be possible? How much would that cost me? Hope to hear from all of you soon regarding this matter guys. Thanks.
