Are there any expat groups in Rio? I'm looking to meet some other americans living in the area to get ideas and help with my upcoming move to the area.

Ther is a group of Americans that live and work in Rio. Many belong to the American Society of Rio de Janeiro. Their phone number was in the book when I was last there in 2004. It is inexpensive to join and you may need to do volunteer work to get to know them better. They do a lot of good for the people of Rio and they hold events like a Super Bowl Party and dances for the members. They are a good source for info, particularly of what NOT to do. They society is old enough that it knows most of the in's and out's of Rio. It can be fun or dangerous and their advice is worth the price of admission. You ca Google the on the internet for more info.Terry

Here is a must see in BrazilCarnival, Rio de Janeiro On a par with Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Carnival in Rio is now one of the biggest celebrations in the world. It also takes place at the same time of year beginning on the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday. The festival itself is so crazy and full of so many things to do and see you are quite likely to feel slightly overwhelmed, and there is no better feeling. The highlight of Carnival is the traditional Brazilian dance, the samba and the parades of dancers are full of more colour and rhythm than you can possibly imagine. If you are planning a trip to Brazil, this is probably one of the best and worst times you could possibly travel. The best for sheer enjoyment, the worst for travel and accommodation so book early and enjoy. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
